Sometimes described as the ‘Tibet of the Americas’ in fact two-thirds of land-locked Bolivia lies within the Amazon basin. Our suggested itinerary combines La Paz and Lake Titicaca with a trip to the Amazon and to the Uyuni Salt Flats, a staggering 10,000 square kilometres of salt. Highlights: La Paz – Tiwanaku – Lake Titicaca – Amazon rainforest – Laguna Colorada – Uyuni Salt Flats We can extend this itinerary to reach the Atacama desert in northern Chile or to travel up to Cuzco and Machu Picchu in Peru.
Your Bolivia holiday begins as you fly to La Paz, via a connection in the USA, Colombia or Madrid. You will be met on arrival in La Paz and driven to your starting hotel in the heart of the city. Welcome to Bolivia!
La Paz city tour with the aid of a shoe-shiner for an insider’s take on the city. Enjoy the cable car for fantastic views, before continuing to the street markets and colonial area of the city and a visit to the extraordinary landscapes of Moon Valley.
Visit the pre-Colombian site of Tiwanaku, located at the Southern end of Lake Titicaca. Although the Tiwanaku civilisation probably goes back to around 1600BC it is thought the ruins here date from 800-1000AD. Overnight in a local hotel.
Travel to Copacabana, located on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Onwards travel by boat out to the Isla del Sol, arriving near the Pilkokaina ruins. Explore the ruins before continuing by foot to reach your eco-lodge here.
Free morning at leisure to further explore Isla del Sol before travelling back across the picturesque Lake Titicaca towards the mainland. Onwards travel to your hotel in La Paz.
Fly from La Paz to Rurrenabaque and travel along the Beni and Quiquibey Rivers to enter the Pilon Lajas Biosphere Reserve. Stay at a community-owned jungle lodge.
A full day’s journey travelling by bus from La Paz through the highlands to Oruro, before continuing by train to reach Uyuni, home of the world’s largest Salt Flats. Overnight in a local hotel.
Visit the ‘cemetery’ of old trains outside of town before travelling through the highlands, via the villages of San Cristobal and Culpina to reach the rich valley of Alota. Overnight in the village of Villamar.
Early morning departure to enter the National Reserve. At 4278m Laguna Colorada is home to over 30,000 flamingos and one of the great highlights of the reserve. The journey continues alongside Challviri lagoon, via the high Dali desert to reach Laguna Verde and a visit to the Arbol de Piedra in the Siloli desert before finally arriving at Ojos de Perdiz.
Morning departure, travelling via the minor lagoons and the Alota valley to reach the world’s largest Salt Fats. Enter the Uyuni Salt Flats for magnificent views across this desert-like landsacape, before travelling across to Isla Incahuasi – a coral island which is covered in giant (and ancient) cacti. Continue to Colchani where you will stay overnight in a salt hotel.
