This is our most popular journey and a true classic, starting with a few days in the Amazon jungle and including the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Machu Picchu and Cuzco, the capital of the Inca Empire, before travelling up to Lake Titicaca and across to La Paz in Bolivia.
Highlights: Amazon Rainforest – Cuzco – Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu – Lake Titicaca – La Paz
Excursions and activities in the jungle, such as alligator spotting, walking tours through primary and secondary rainforest, birdwatching and, hopefully catching glimpses of monkeys.
Fly from Puerto Maldonado to Cuzco. You will be met at the airport and driven down to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Afternoon tour of the impressive Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo.
Morning excursion to the Maras salt pools which have been used since pre-Inca times. Free afternoon for other activities and excursions, such as cycling or riding, or perhaps a visit to the Amaru community to learn about the traditional weaving process.
Travel by train to Machu Picchu, Latin America’s most important site which was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. We offer a range of accommodation in the local village but early booking is essential if you wish to stay at the Sanctuary Lodge next to the ruins.
Morning at leisure for a return visit to Machu Picchu or to explore the local village. In the afternoon return by train to the Sacred Valley and continue by road to your hotel in Cuzco.
Half-day tour of Cuzco, including the cathedral, the Plaza de Armas and Sacsayhuaman, the impressive Inca fortress which overlooks the city. Afternoon at leisure for you to further explore.
Travel to Lake Titicaca on board the luxury Andean Explorer train which runs between 3-4 times a week. You can alternatively travel by bus, which operates on a daily basis.
Full day excursion out on the picturesque Lake Titicaca to visit the floating Uros Islands and then onwards to either the island of Taquile or Amantani.
Travel to Isla del Sol. The journey from Puno travels via Copacabana and then by hydrofoil or catamaran to reach the Island of the Sun. Overnight in a local hotel.
Continue across Lake Titicaca and travel by road through the Bolivian altiplano to reach La Paz. The first glimpse of the city as it opens up in the valley below is astonishing.
